MCG directs fire department to seal 39 banquet halls

Gurugram: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (mcg) has directed the fire department to seal 39 banquet halls running without any permission or sanction of the state government and to submit an action taken report by October 21.

The MCG pointed out that these banquet halls are not equipped with any fire safety system and as they are using inflammable articles during the functions, any untoward incident might happen. Also, a no-objection certificate (NOC) can't be issued to them as these halls are running illegally.

This move came after Haryana Lokayukta received complaints regarding banquet halls which were operating illegally. A total of 72 banquet halls are located in Gurugram that falls under the jurisdiction of MCG. However, it was pointed out that 27 of them fall in the 900-metre restricted belt of ammunition depot in the city and out of them only four have got a stay from the civil court. Some banquet halls in the restricted zone had approached the Supreme Court in 2011 and are covered by the order to maintain the status quo.

According to MCG records, only two banquet halls have a valid NOC from the fire safety point of view. "The safety of people and property is at stake in these banquet halls and it is imperative that fire safety system should be installed by these halls," the order from MCG stated.

Last month, a drive was conducted in which three banquet halls were sealed by the MCG for operating without obtaining permission from the authority.

The banquet halls which will be sealed are located on Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, Sheetla Mata Temple Road, Sohna Road, Pataudi Road, Badshapur, Rajendra Park and Daultabad. Thus, families that have booked these banquet halls will face inconvenience.

The Gurugram Municipal Corporation in the past has also taken action the marriage halls that are operating illegally. Some of the major rules which the marriage halls have to comply with are being located at the main road which is 18 metre and the service road being 12 metres wide. It should be spread in the area of minimum one acre.

The ground floor must be around 50 per cent of the construction area, the banquet hall must not be 21 metres long and the main entrance should be 1.8 metres lower than the building.
