Man held for running fake website

New Delhi: Delhi Police CyPAD unit arrested an IIT Postgraduate for running fake website cheating people in the name of free laptop government scheme on the occasion of the re-election of the new government. Police said that over 15,00,000 persons were exposed to the con-job within two days. The fake website offering the bogus scheme was promoted using instant messaging apps and became viral over WhatsApp.

Police identified the accused as Rakesh Jangid (23), he was arrested from Nagaur in Rajasthan. "Using the Make in India logo and the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he had created a website which was offering free laptops to 20 million registered users," police said.

The investigating agency further said that in order to make easy money, he decided to use his knowledge of technology by launching a website and making it so popular so that money would flow from the hits received on the website through advertisements which would be placed on the website. He also intended to capture personal data of millions of citizens and use that for illegal monetary gains.

In order to popularize his website, he chose to launch a website offering a free laptops government scheme' to the general public and tried to lure them by stating that these were being distributed by the Government of India on the occasion of the formation of the new government.

The accused had cleverly used Google Adsense, a program that allows bloggers and website owners to make money by displaying Google ads.
