Man duped of nearly Rs 2L after ordering wine bottle online

Ghaziabad: A Ghaziabad based businessman was allegedly duped by nearly Rs 2 lakhs after he made a payment through his credit card for ordering a wine bottle online.

According to police, the victim has been identified as Kartik Goyal, a well known timber trader of the city. He owns a shop at Hapur road in Ghaziabad.

As per the victim, he had made payment of Rs 2,900 to get the wine bottle delivered to his address, however, within a few hours of payment around Rs 2 lakh got debited from his account.

Kartik Goyal said that he wanted to give a wine bottle to one of his dealers as a gift.

In his surrounding area, the wine bottle which he wanted was not available so he searched shops on internet to look for the shops who deliver wine bottles online.

"When I called the number which was shown on the Internet, a person received the call and claimed that he is an employee of the wine shop located at Windsor market in Indirapuram area. He asked me to make an online payment of Rs 2900 against the wine bottle through UPI. The accused again called me and asked to make a payment of Rs 40 more as delivery charges. An amount of Rs 9,100 got debited from my account within a few minutes and in next few hours Rs 1.9 lakh were also deducted from my account in five transactions," he added.

The victim said that he tried several times on the same number but it went switched off always. Kartik even visited the address of the shop which was mentioned on the Internet and it came to light that the number didn't belong to any wine shop situated at Windsor market.

He then informed police about the fraud while the matter is being investigated by the cyber cell of Ghaziabad police.

"The complaint has been registered and the matter is being investigated by cyber cell. We are verifying the mobile number involved and transactions made through victim's card. Investigation is underway and we expect a breakthrough soon," said a senior police officer.
