Lt Col hangs self fearing court martial in Dwarka

Fearing that he would be court-martialed, a 46-year-old Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself right outside his house located in South West Delhi's Dwarka area on Friday.

The police claimed that no suicide note was has been recovered from his possession. However, his wife had informed the police that he took the drastic step after fearing a court martial in a case of misappropriation of funds against him in Siliguri.

The deceased, Lt Col Jagdish Prakash, was a native of Kerala. He was found hanging from a grill on the first floor, located near the staircase outside his house located in Salaria Apartments in Sector 20 Dwarka.

"We had received a PCR call from Salaria Apartments that a resident had hung himself outside his house. When the police team reached the spot they identified the body and shifted him to a local police station. The doctors had confirmed that he died due to the hanging. No foul play has been detected so far," said a senior police official.

"No suicide note was recovered from his possession but prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide," said Surender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West). Prakash lived with his wife and two children in this sector since the last seven years.

When the inquest proceedings were conducted the deceased's wife told the cops that Prakash had been depressed for the past few weeks because of the ongoing case against him.

A police source confirmed the development and told Millennium Post, "The wife had informed us that he was visibly depressed for the past few weeks. Prakashi would roam around in the night and would step out of his house at odd hours and take a stroll. On the day of the incident he stepped out of his house at 3 am and his wife thought that he would come back and slept," said the source.

His wife woke up the next day around 6:55 am and found that he husband was missing. She even contacted him several times on his cell phone and found that it was inside the house itself.

Later, she stepped outside her house and found that her husband was hanging from the railing of the stairs.

Police said that he was serving in Corps of Engineers and was presently posted at Kashmiri House at Rajaji Marg and hailed from Kerala. They said that they have registered a case and investigations have been taken up. Prakash' is survived by his wife and two children.
