Lekhi harps on 'reduce, recycle, reuse'

New Delhi: New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi on Wednesday said that reducing generation of garbage, segregation at source, recycling garbage items and reuse of the same are the keys for 'Garbage Free Cities of India', as transportation of solid waste is hazardous for the green cover of the cities.
The MP's remarks came after inaugurating the first 'Regional Workshop on Capacity Building for Star Rating of Garbage Free Cities' at Vigyan Bhawan here on Wednesday.
The workshop was organised by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
Earlier in the morning, Smt. Lekhi has given her Sharamdaan in the Swachhta Drive launched by NDMC at Pillanji Village, Sarojini Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar and Sanjay Camp and Chanakyapuri in New Delhi. The RWAs, MTAs and other local residents of the New Delhi area participated in the Swachhta Drive on the occasion.
Stressing upon the setting up of decentralised MSW Management Segregatioin of Waste at source making colonies zero waste, Smt. Lekhi said that construction and development wastes (C&D wastes) in the form of Malba should be scientifically disposed off to arrest the air as well as the water pollution.
Chairman of NDMC, Naresh Kumar, offered to set-up an establishment of Knowledge Centre for Swachh Bharat Mission in New Delhi area, so as to impart the logistic support, technical details and backup centre for the Swachh Bharat Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
"The technical knowhow might be extended to the stake holders by the experts of the Ministry," he said.
