L-G House seeks report from Delhi Police on malpractices of touts

New Delhi: The L-G House has sought details from the Delhi Police regarding their action against illegal activities of touts in the garb of tourist guides.

Sources said that the Lieutenant Governor had earlier pursued a report related to touting cases registered at Paharganj police station following which he had asked the city police to provide more details in this regard.

Furthermore, on September 3, this year, a report was sent by the then Special CP (L&O, North) to the LG House regarding actions taken against unauthorised guides, touts, said sources. "The report claimed that 20 cases were registered at Paharganj police station till August, this year, against the illegal activities of touts," sources added.

The report further claimed that last year, 23 persons were arrested under Section 4 of the Delhi Prevention of Touting and Malpractices against Tourists Act-2010, in 20 cases registered at Paharganj police station. "All SHOs and division/beat officers have been briefed and sensitised to take strict action against any such illegal activity noticed in their area," the report claimed.

In November this year, a senior official from the L-G house wrote to Delhi Police seeking more details regarding their action against illegal activities of touts in other police stations. "It may be clarified if cases have been registered in other police stations, if not, then the reasons for the same may also be submitted," reads the letter.

Earlier this year DCP (IGI) Sanjay Bhatia held a meeting with private travel agents in which they were told to stay away from touting activities. "Agents were told not to use government logos in their shop hoardings to misguide passengers," a senior official opined.

In October thisw year, a US national was misguided and cheated of his money by a tout and his associates in New Delhi area. One accused was arrested in the case. Last year, the Delhi Police had apprehended two touts for allegedly soliciting foreign tourists outside a five-star hotel in Connaught Place. They were caught red-handed soliciting foreign tourists outside the hotel.
