JNUTA appeals RS on seat cuts

The JNU Teachers' Association appealed to all members of the Rajya Sabha to extend their support over the rollback and rejection of the UGC Gazette Notification. JNUTA alleged that the Notification stands in violation of the Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006.

The association alleged that the implication of the Notification has already led to a massive 83 per cent seat cut for admissions to the research programmes of the varsity.

"The 54 per cent increase of seats over the 2006 intake, following the CEI Act 2006, cannot be reversed, and any reduction below the 2006+54 per cent level is patently illegal," stated JNUTA.

The implication of the new method where the entrance test is merely a qualifying exam and viva is weighted at a 100 per cent was also highlighted by the association as an unfair means. The teachers' association also stated about the clarification that universities are autonomous institutes and have necessary freedom to adopt practices which they consider appropriate within the board framework of national policy should be made.
