JNUSU polls: Names of candidates declared

New Delhi: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Wednesday announced its panel for the upcoming Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) polls. The right-wing students union has fielded Lalit Pandey for the post of president, Geetashri Boruah for vice-president, Ganesh Gurjar for general secretary and Venkat Choubey for joint-secretary.

The Left Unity has fielded N Sai Balaji for the post of president, Sarika Choudhary for the vice-president, Aizaz Ahmad Rather for the secretary, and Amutha Jayadeep for the joint-secretary.

Besides the routine campaigning, the candidates in JNU are also supposed to make speeches about their agenda followed by a round of questions at the "Presidential debate". The night-long event which is scheduled tonight is conducted in the style of US presidential debates and is a sought-after affair and also a deciding factor for the union elections.

Other unions who have fielded their candidates in the JNU polls this year include ABVP, Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI), Democratic Students Federation (DSF) and Birsa Ambdekar Phule Students Association (BAPSA).

JNUSU is the representative body of the students in the varsity. The polling is scheduled on September 14.

Meanwhile, in Delhi University, AISA-CYSS alliance declared its entire panel for upcoming DUSU election. Abhigyan, a student of Ramjas College, will contest for the post of president, Anshika Sing from Dayal Singh College will contest for the post of Vice President, Chandramani Dev a student of Law Centre II will fight of the post of secretary and Sunny Tanwar for the post of the joint-secretary.

After a long time, ABVP has declared a Purvanchali as its vice presidential candidate. Shakti Singh of Law Faculty will be contesting for ABVP. Earlier during a student rally, he showed his strength as thousands of students gathered and supported him.
