JNU students’ union alleges neglect of library
New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union has alleged severe neglect and mismanagement of the Ambedkar Central Library at Jawaharlal Nehru University, claiming that the condition of the facility has deteriorated significantly.
In a statement, the union said a recent inspection of the library revealed extensive damage, including broken windows, exposure of books to dust and moisture, and lack of proper maintenance. According to the union, a majority of windows in the building are damaged, leading to unhygienic conditions, with pigeons entering freely and damaging books. It also alleged that several books remain uncatalogued and are lying in piles.
The union criticised the administration over the absence of a permanent Chief Librarian, stating that an acting official has been holding charge for several years without addressing key issues. It termed the situation as “vandalism” of an important academic resource and demanded immediate intervention.
In a separate development, JNUSU also raised concerns regarding ongoing student issues, including shortages of LPG cylinders affecting mess and canteen services. The union alleged that students are facing reduced menus and increased costs, adding to their difficulties. It further claimed that attempts to meet university officials, including the Dean of Students, were unsuccessful, with authorities either unavailable or unwilling to engage. The union also highlighted delays in hostel allotments, stating that several students are still awaiting accommodation.
