It's really tough to get a disability certificate; DCPCR study to shed light

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) plans to conduct a study on difficulties encountered by the parents of a differently-abled child while getting the disability certificate.

A meeting was held in July between DCPCR and other stakeholders like NGOs to uplift the differently-abled children. The meeting was headed by DCPCR chairperson Ramesh Negi.

Samrah Mirza, member DCPCR told Millennium Post that in the meeting itself the discussion was made regarding the need of the study.

"We will also evaluate the ground reality of the guidelines related to children with special needs," said Samrah Mirza.

Members of child rights body, who were present in the meeting, said that there will be a sensitisation programme for all the doctors involved in the process of issuing disability certificates.

Chairperson suggested that a list should be prepared of persons-in-charge and officers of every department that deals with Child Rights and Disability in Delhi so that letters can be sent to them as and when needed.

The discussion was also on holding a meeting with Medical Superintendents of Hospitals to address the issue of non-implementation of issuance of disability certificates within the fixed time frame. DCPCR in association with an NGO may develop a child-friendly telephone directory for all the matters related to children.

This will be uploaded on the official website of DCPCR. Every hospital should have a help-desk to provide robust customer service, was one of the important points discussed in the meeting.

The child rights body with a Delhi-based college recently held a sensitization program for the safety of children with special needs. The event witnessed a participation of more than 150 students coming from different walks of life.
