Gurugram: Huge piles of garbage were witnessed across various areas of Gurugram as the strike of sanitation workers of the municipal body entered its second week. Ashok Tanwar, president of Haryana Pradesh Congress, also joined the hunger strike of the workers at the municipal body office.
Though a sizeable part of the city may be filled with stench, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has also started a campaign to clean the city. It is important to note that not only Gurugram but all the districts of Haryana are facing cleanliness crisis due to the strike by civic workers.
Amid the major differences between MCG and the private company that was given the contract to collect and recycle the waste, the cleanliness of Gurugram is being compromised as the sanitation workers have been on an indefinite strike for the past ten days. With the garbage piling up, the MCG started an initiative called 80 hours round-the-clock campaign where most of its workers have now been clearing the garbage.
Moreover, MCG has sounded optimistic that steps are being taken to ensure citizens effectively segregate waste generated in their homes, not many seem to be impressed by the claims of the MCG.
Most of the environmental activists and members of resident welfare associations have claimed that there is a slow progress in improving the situation at Bandhwari landfill site. Further, there have also been complaints that vacant areas around the colonies are being used by the MCG officials to dump the garbage.
