Gold hidden in rectum, juicer, speakers seized at IGI Airport
New Delhi: The Customs officials at IGI airport arrested three persons for smuggling gold worth over Rs 44 lakh into the country in two separate cases. In both the cases, different modus operandi were used for smuggling.
In the first case, a man was arrested with gold worth over Rs 15 lakh. The accused had concealed the gold inside a juicer and bluetooth speakers. The passenger was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday.
Additional Commissioner of Customs, Amandeep Singh, said that a detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of two gold pieces, total weighing 462 grams.
"The gold, valued at Rs 15.96 lakh, was concealed inside the motor shaft of a juicer machine and bluetooth speakers kept in his luggage," said Singh, adding that the accused was arrested and the yellow metal was seized.
During further investigation, the passenger also admitted smuggling out 3,234 grams gold, valued at Rs 1.11 crore, and foreign currency equivalent of Rs 1.12 crore was also exported by the accused.
Meanwhile in another case, two persons were arrested by the Customs officials at the International airport in Delhi for allegedly trying to smuggle gold into the country. One of the accused was hiding gold in his rectum.
According to customs, two Indian passengers were intercepted after his arrival from Bangkok on Saturday. On a personal search of one of the passengers, four pieces of gold wrapped in black colour adhesive tape were recovered, two of which were concealed in the pockets of his trouser. During investigation, the second passenger admitted that two pieces of gold were hidden in his rectum. The seized gold, weighing 870 grams in total and valued at Rs 29.56 lakh, was seized and the accused arrested, Amandeep Singh added.
"On further investigation, one of the accused admitted his involvement in smuggling of gold and being a part of the gold smuggling syndicate," Singh said.
