Gurugram: In spite of the contract being giving to a Chinese company to collect and segregate waste in Gurugram, setting up of an effective mechanism is proving to be a major challenge.
Shortcomings in the system recently came to light, after the councillor of ward 15Seema Pahuja protested over lack of cleanliness in her ward.
To resolve the issue, various residential societies have joined hands to do their bit in keeping the city clean by setting up decomposting units, where waste is recycled into products that can be reutilised.
Recently, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) commissioner Yashpal Yadav visited one such unit and applauded the citizens for their efforts.
"Early morning visited uniworld garden and saw decomposting plant run by Rahul Khera with the help of RWA, great work, 300kg kitchen waste is being reprocessed and reused without much investment. Need to replicate all over city," Yadav stated on Twitter.
In the past, MCG has initiated talks with various RWAs in different sectors and colonies of Gurugram for setting up composting units in residential societies.
Presently, garbage from Gurugram and Faridabad is dumped at a 30-acre landfill site situated in the Aravallis.
MCG has been conducting a pilot study for around a year for effective segregation and recycling of waste in the city. However, this time, MCG officials said that serious and mandatory measures will be taken for effective recycling of waste.
Under the process of composting, RWAs have been explained to keep two separate bins of, red and green coloured, for segregation of waste. The green bin will contain bio-degradable wastes, like kitchen waste, food waste and horticulture waste, while the Red bin will contain non-biodegradable and recyclable dry waste products, like paper, bulb, tube lights, plastic, glass and wood.
MCG will be set up compost units in various private and public residential areas.
