Gang who broke into ATM in South Delhi, busted
New Delhi: A week after a gang of thieves cleared an unguarded ATM in Maidan Garhi area, the Delhi Police has solved the case and arrested five perpetrators of the crime from Kharak Village.
Police said that the accused were involved in more than 15 cases including ATMs thefts.
Police identified the accused as Ali Jaan (32), Akhtar Hussain (47), Amir (22), Shamshaad (21) and Mohammad Waseem (39).
In the intervening night of September 14-15 ATM located at Asola in MaidanGarhi was cut through with the help of gas-cutter and an amount of Rs 28.89 lacs was stolen by unknown persons. The accused had painted CCTV black.
A team formed under Geetanjali Khandelwal Additional DCP-II (South) started their investigation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Atul Kumar Thakur said that to nab the accused the team of 30 policemen were deployed in the area of Mewat for five days (September 17 to 21). They changed their attire to look like residents. Since September 19, locations of the offender and suspects were continuously monitored.
"All 30 members of the police team were sensitized to be ready to face any kind of eventuality as it was a high possibility that suspects are carrying firearms and can open fire," said DCP South Delhi.
In the morning of September 21, inputs were received that some of the suspects would be travelling towards Delhi in a Verna Car.
A trap was laid at Maandi road and a car was seen coming towards Dera Mode, it was signalled to stop but instead of stopping the car, the occupant tried to run over the car on the police personnel. After a chase, they were cornered in the Auto-ground of Kharak Village and overpowered.
The accused persons have revealed that they have committed other similar crime of ATM Theft by adopting the same modus-operandi in and around Delhi. They are involved in more than 15 cases in Delhi and Haryana. Their more previous involvements are further being verified from neighbouring states.
"After the gap of 10-15 days the gang used to commit the crime. They spent money on gambling," police said.
