New Delhi: With the arrest of three women, Delhi Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested a gang of female thieves from Shadipur and recovered jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh from their possession.
Police said the accused women were identified as Laxmi (30), Karina (25) and Varsha (22).
Cops said an incident of theft was reported on 16 February when one Gurvinder Singh boarded a metro train from Karol Bagh to Old Delhi metro station.
Singh changed the train for Old Delhi from Rajiv Chowk Metro station when a group of women boarded the metro holding a child in her lap.
When Singh reached Old Delhi, he realised that the jewellery had been stolen from his bag. A case was registered.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Pankaj Singh said the accused were arrested from Shadipur area.
During interrogation, police came to know that all accused were Maharastra natives. They commit the crime to earn the livelihood for their family members. They travel in a group of 3 to 10 ladies. One of them carries baby in their lap. They create an atmosphere of the crowd and surround the target.
"Taking advantage of the rush one of them opened the zip of the bag and on finding right time the other lady takes out articles," said the DCP.
