Fraudsters lure woman through offers, withdraw Rs 65,000 from her bank a/c
Gurugram: In a recent case of cybercrime, a woman residing in Sushant Lok in Gurugram lost over Rs 65,000. According to the complainant Pooja Saxena, she received a link of the latest offers through a message from a private bank. Upon clicking the link of the latest offers, it required her financial details, failing which it prompted that Rs 9,000 shall be deducted from her account.
After she complied with the directive and filled in the sensitive data, she received a host of text messages through which the fraudsters were able to draw a total of Rs 65,000 in different intervals. The Cyber Cell of Gurugram Police has registered the case under Sections 379 (theft), 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66-D (cheating by using a computer source) of the IT Act. "I received an SMS alert about my transactions. Even though the card was in my name, someone else was transferring money from my account. I immediately informed my bank about the unauthorised transactions and blocked my account," said the victim.
"There is no denying the fact that cyber crimes are a major law and order challenge across the city. What is adding to the difficulty is the new methods by which the fraudsters are duping the victims, " said a senior police official.
It seems that Gurugram is proving to be a hub for criminals indulging in cyber crimes not only in the National Capital Region (NCR) but also across the country. In less than five months, more than 1,000 cases of cyber crimes have already been registered in the cyber city. The challenge to the law enforcement officials can be gauged from the fact that most of the cases has yet not been solved and are in the preliminary investigation stages. To tackle cybercrime, there is a dedicated cyber crime police station in the city. Despite having a separate police station, only 50 cases have been registered in the state.
Brazen examples of cyber crimes in recent times have highlighted the vulnerabilities of the victims and extreme dangers posed by criminals using digital means.
