Gurugram: Perils to the safety of citizens travelling on the roads of National Capital Region (NCR) once again came to the fore when four of a family succumbed to the injuries in a tragic mishap on late Tuesday night. The incident occurred at Ballabgarh Chowk in Sohna on the outskirts of Gururgam. The tragedy struck after an over-speeding dumper hit the bike which then rammed into an SUV. Irshad who was driving the bike died along with his sister Afsana, who was travelling with him. What can, however, be considered as a cruel twist of fate was the death of Afsana's children –two girls identified as Saima and Ayat, both below 6 years.
The deceased's one-year-old brother who survived the horrific tragedy is presently being treated in a Gurugram hospital. His condition at the moment is said to be critical. The SUV driver has also sustained injuries but is said to be out of danger. The driver of the dumper fled after the incident. The Gurugram police which has registered the case under relevant sections has begun the search operation to get hold of the driver of the dumper.
The dangers to the commuters can be gauged from the fact that on an average there are eight mishaps on city roads daily. In 2017, 481 lives were lost due to accidents on the city roads. Commuters on two-wheelers and pedestrians were the most the vulnerable groups among the victims. To reduce the rate of road accidents, the Haryana government has started the Haryana vision zero campaign. Under this campaign, the Gurugram authorities plan to set up preventive mechanisms at the deadly stretches along the Delhi-Jaipur Highway.
Faulty road designs, poor signage systems and poor management of traffic are attributed as major reasons for accidents along the Delhi-Jaipur highway. Coordinating with the national highway authority of India (NHAI), the public authorities plan to construct foot over-bridges and improve the signage system. The Gurugram police has also introduced over 300 traffic cops to manage the traffic in the city.
