Former Civil Defence volunteers held for posing as cops, extorting people

New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested two men from Rohini who, in a modus operandi now very popular among other criminals, used to pose as policemen and extort money from the public.
Police said on Sunday that the accused were identified as Sukhram and Suresh, whose arrests led to the solving of two robbery cases.
A Delhi Police personnel uniform and one Civil Defence volunteer uniform were recovered from the accused, along with nine mobile phones and 67 voter identity cards that they had stolen.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta on Sunday said that a complainant Shravan had said that on March 2, around 8.00 pm, while he was going to the market near Om Plaza in Bawana, the two accused persons came on a black-coloured motorcycle, snatched his mobile phone and fled away.
The complainant told cops that the pillion rider was wearing khakhi pants and a jacket.
A robbery case was registered and several teams were constituted to nab the accused persons.
The arrests were made on March 3, after cops received a tip-off, that the accused would be present in Rohini, the DCP further said.
Police said that Sukhram, 28, is resident of Sultanpur Dabas, and a constable in Delhi Civil Defence. Due to financial hardship, he turned to robbery. He purchased the Delhi Police uniform from Kingsway Camp area and used it to extort money from unsuspecting people.
Suresh, a 36-year-old native of Dariyapur Kalan, was also a constable in Delhi Civil Defense. He too had left his job due to financial crunches and joined Sukhram. "Efforts are being made to trace the recovered mobiles and I-cards to their owners," said police .
