Errant driver runs over homeless

New Delhi: A 50-year-old homeless woman died in a road accident in New Delhi on Sunday. Minutes before her death, the deceased was dragged for a few meters by the vehicle which was driven by an errant 20-year-old woman, who was later arrested.

The woman identified as Phoolwati lived with her son (20) and daughter (22) nearby Bangla Saheb Gurudwara. "She fed her family with the earnings she managed by selling flowers and garlands near the gurudwara. Now the main question that arises is who will take care of the two children as their mother was the only bread-butter earner of the family," said Manjeet, who is the caretaker of the shelter home. He further stated that the deceased was a very humble lady and was residing for several years. The daughter was learning some vocation activity with the earning of her mother.

Meanwhile, DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma claimed that soon after registering the case, they arrested the accused. "The accused was not drunk. She was returning from a food joint in the CP area," said the DCP. Police claimed that a head constable (HC) from CP police station found that around 9.15 pm on Sunday, a black coloured jeep was coming from the wrong direction despite many people shouting and running behind the moving vehicle. Reacting to the situation, the HC closed the barricades which eventually forced the driver to stop the car. Police claimed that three girls were found sitting inside the vehicle.

"People told us that a woman was trapped under the moving car. She was rushed to the hospital where doctor declared her dead on arrival," said the police officer. Upon further investigation, it came to light that the deceased lived in a shelter home in New Delhi. A case under sections 279 and 304A of Indian Penal Code has been registered against the offender at the Connaught Place police station.

The data for the year 2018 (till 15 April) stated that 1473 cases of the simple accidents were reported out of which 440 accidents due to reckless driving claimed the lives of around 450 people.
