EOW probes fraud of over Rs 18L reported from post office

New Delhi: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police has started their probe in the case of misappropriation of money from post office in Lajpat Nagar area.

Police said that the fraud was to the tune of over Rs 18 lakh and the suspect in the case was then a clerk in the post office.

According to police, the complaint was filed by the senior superintendent of post office in which it was alleged that the then counter clerk of the post office.

"The suspect in question usually collected the money directly from the customer in cash to deposit in their respective accounts and impressed date stamp on their passbooks after making manual entries, but did not deposited in the respective accounts," the complainant told police.

The matter got enquired and observed that usually the amount to be deposited by the customers in their accounts at the post office counter was collected by the counter clerk Surender Kumar (suspect).

He made the entry in the passbooks and impressed it with date stamp of post office but the amount of deposits was not accounted for in post office accounts and thus pocketed the amount.

"In few accounts, a certain amount of money was deposited however which is not equal to the amunt of money to be deposited by the customer. The period of fraud is from September 29,2015 to January 4, 2018," police said.

The total amount of fraud that has been established as of now was Rs 18,57,850 in different POSB accounts.

"From the contents of complaints and enquiry conducted so far, prima facie as case under sections 409 and 420 of IPC made out," police said.
