English emerges as most sought-after subject

New Delhi: Unlike, last year, science subjects are not the preferred choice of students applying to Delhi University. This year, of the total applications received (2,78,574), the maximum number of applications received are for BA English (Hons) (1,26,327) , followed by BA Programme (1,05,818) and Political Science (105590). The number of applications received along with the past trend is directly related to the cut-off declared by the university. This year, the teachers feel the cutoff could be pushed up for English.

Last year, in the first list, the highest cutoff for English was 98% at Lady Shri Ram College for Women. The lowest percentage stood at 92% at Deshbandu College and Kalindi college for women.

The least number of applicants were for vocational courses - 49,378 applicants for BA(Voc) Tourism Management, followed by 53,207 for BA (Voc) Human Resource Management.BA (Hons) Applied Psychology was the third least popular with 57,584 applicants. Last year, BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and Mathematics was in the top five most applied courses, but this year Bachelor of Science courses don't figure in the list of top five courses that have received the maximum number of applications.

DU offers various science-related courses like BSc (Hons) in Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Anthropology, Biological Science, Physics, Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Mathematical Science, Physical Science and Life Science. In year 2016, the university had received 71,505 applications for BCom and it was the second most applied course.

Similarly, Economics had received 63,264 applications last year. In 2014, this course was the top preferred choice. There were close 1.58 applications for the course alone. However, this year the total number of male applicants are 1,44,248, women 1,34,297 and other applicants 29. According to an official from the university, 2,78,544 aspirants have made payments.Last year, around 2.20 lakh candidates had made payments.
