Eleven persons arrested for duping former Army officers

Noida: The Noida Police Cyber Cell team has busted a gang of 11 persons, including prime accused Vishwajeet Mali, for allegedly duping several ex-Army officers with crores of rupees in the name of a fake insurance agency, said police.

Police on Wednesday said the matter came to light after the gang duped a retired Brigadier and he filed a complaint at Sector-20 police station.

The complainant had alleged that some men had called him up to say that his insurance policy has lapsed and needs to be renewed.

They further asked him to deposit the amount into their bank accounts. The retired officer said that he had been duped of Rs 9 lakh by these people.

Similar cases were registered by a retired major general KK Sehgal, a resident of Sector017 (Rs 2.88 lakh) and by a colonel Vinay Khanna (Rs 21 lakh).

Police recovered Rs 3.39 lakh in cash and have seized an account with Rs 2.8 lakh in it.

They have also recovered seven PAN cards, 11 Aadhaar cards (two of which may be fake), 36 mobile phones, 50 ATM cards, five driving licenses, one passport and three passbooks from the possession of the accused men.

"Most of the accused are graduates and one of them is even a lawyer. However, the gang leader, Vishwajeet Mali, a resident of West Bengal, is only a matriculate.

"This was an inter-state gang and they often moved from one place to other and have duped people in Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Delhi, Rajasthan, Bihar etc," said said Ajay Pal Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police, Noida.
