Elderly woman killed as tanker mows down bike

NEW DELHI: A 60-year-old woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle in south east Delhi, was crushed to death reportedly after an oil tanker hit the bike early Friday morning. Police said that the accident was reported on the busy Lajpat Bagar Ring road.
The woman was on her way home with her son, who was riding the bike, when the tanker hit them from behind.
Passersby immediately rushed to help the two and took them to a nearby hospital. While the son's condition is reported to be stable, the woman succumbed to her injuries.
"The woman was a resident of Jaitpur area of south Delhi and has been identified as 60-year-old Noor Jahan," a senior police officer told reporters here.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said, "The accused truck driver Kamlesh, a 40-year-old resident of Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh has been arrested. He was reportedly going towards a petrol pump at Mayur Vihar, while the deceased woman was returning to her home after check-up at Safdarjung Hospital."
After the scene of the accident was cleared, personnel from Lajpat Nagar police station, along with traffic policemen, were deployed to control traffic as the accident caused snarls in the area.
Before he fled the spot, the accused truck driver reportedly hit some more vehicles with the tanker.
Police have registered a case under sections 279 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code against the driver of the vehicle.
Noor Jahan's body was handed over to her family after post-mortem in the evening.
