NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday called the Election Commission (EC) 'biased' and alleged that it was conspiring with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to destabilise the AAP government.
Addressing media persons here, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj referred to remarks by the poll panel's former legal advisor, SK Mendiratta, that his opinion was not taken before the EC disqualified 20 AAP MLAs for allegedly holding 'office of profit'.
"Now, it is established that the EC is biased. If advice was not taken from him (Mendiratta), it means that advice was coming from the Prime Minister's office," Bharadwaj said.
He further said that the former Chief Election Commission, under whose tenure the decision to disqualify the AAP MLAs was taken, was an IAS officer close to Modi when the latter was the Gujarat Chief Minister.
"The country's EC, with the Prime Minister, is conspiring to destabilise the elected government in Delhi," the Greater Kailash MLA said, adding that it was "very dangerous sign".
The EC had earlier announced that it would grant an oral hearing to the 20 AAP MLAs in the office of profit case on May 17.
The Commission, in a letter on Friday, invited the 20 AAP legislators, as well as their petitioner Prashant Patel, to appear before it "either in person or through authorised legal representative" at 3 pm on this date to make their case.
