During riots, Special Branch advised DCPs to suspend internet, enhance security

New Delhi: From suspending internet services to enhancing security in auto and tyre shops to keep sharp vigil in areas having students in large numbers, were the suggestions given by Delhi Police's Special Branch to Deputy Commissioners of Police in the form of internal messages during north-east Delhi violence.

Police sources told Millennium Post that a message was sent to DCPs and other senior officers regarding the north-east Delhi violence on February 25.

"Incidents of riots (on February 23 and 24), stone-pelting and road blocking are continued at various places in the North East district. Protests, demonstrations against CAA, NRC and NPR are continuously going on in Seelampur, Mustafabad, North Ghonda, Khureji, Jama Masjid, Turkman Gate, Shaheen Bagh, Idgah Sadar Bazar and Jamia Millia Islamia," reads the Delhi Police message.

"The misuse of the internet is reported and suspected in spreading of rumours on different groups and platforms. It is, therefore, advised that the internet services in north-east district, as well as other sensitive parts, maybe get suspended till the situation is normal," reads the message sent on February 25.

The message further reads: It has been observed that miscreants are putting auto and tyre shops on fire even one petrol pump has also been targeted it is advisable that the adequate water arrangements with fire fighting equipment may be placed in such probable places.

"Sharp vigil is required in areas having students in large numbers, mixed population areas and in areas where protests, demonstrations, march, rally are being held. All places which have a history of communal incidents may be covered adequately," reads the message.

Meanwhile, another message was sent on February 24 to senior officers of Delhi Police.

DCPs and Joint CPs were told to take all possible steps including holding meetings with local community leaders, youths, religious leaders and Aman Committees to counter any false propaganda or rumours.

"Vigil is also required over the possible misuse of cyberspace, social media by miscreants for stoking communal passions by circulating provocative material prompt measures for blocking such contents as per standard operating procedures are required," the message reads.
