Drug racket busted with seizure of 37,500 tablets

New Delhi: An interstate drug cartel was busted by Delhi Police after they arrested three men near Red Fort on Monday and recovered more than 37,000 tablets of Tramadol. The accused were identified as Babloo Kumar, Srichand and Rakesh Mishra.

Investigators said on Wednesday that the drug Tramadol affects the limbic system of the brain and forces neurotransmitters to stimulate pleasure.

The medicines were found in 150 boxes of Tori SR (Tramadol hydrochloride tablets 100 mg), each box containing 25 leafs of 10 tablets each, manufactured by a pharmaceutical company Himalaya Meditek Pvt. Ltd. Their value in the grey market is estimated to be Rs 37,50,000.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan said that accused Babloo disclosed that he was working on the instructions of a person, who procured the tablets and other controlled and psychotropic substances for supply in different parts of India through couriers.

Accused Srichand had earlier this year come into contact with a person dealing in medicines. Using Srichand's knowledge as a courier, the latter lured him into the supply of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Meanwhile, Mishra came into contact with Srichand, who introduced him to Babloo, and Babloo lured Mishra into the illicit drug trade.

"Tramadol is a powerful painkiller, a synthetic opiate drug, and has been declared psychotropic substance. Its sale in the country is regulated and controlled by the NDPS act. It is internationally smuggled and has possible supply links to global terror groups," said Ranjan.

He added that Tramadol – also known as the 'fighter drug' among anti-narcotics authorities – is abused on a wide scale to suppress pain and boost strength during injury and induce a sense of euphoria.

It is often prescribed for relief from severe/inordinate pain.

The Special Team for Active Robbers and Snatchers (STARS) team of Delhi Police, which made the arrest, was formed under the supervision of DCP (Crime) Ramgopal Naik.
