Driver of Mercedes car that hit biker surrenders

Accidents involving high-end cars continue unabated in the Capital, as a speeding Mercedes hit a 22-year-old biker in North Delhi's Civil Lines area on Monday night.

The driver of the errant vehicle was arrested after he surrendered to the police on Wednesday evening.

The offending car's driver has been identified as Manish Jain, a computer books publisher in Daryaganj. Fearing the consequences of his actions, Jain chose to surrender.

According to police, Jain had turned himself in after CCTV footage of the incident came to light.

The biker, Trinesh Kumar Kaim, is currently being treated at Lok Nayak Hospital.

The accident took place on Monday night when 22-year-old Kaim was returning home on his Yamaha motorcycle, after meeting his friend in Derawal Nagar around 10.45 pm.

In the meantime, Jain was coming in his Mercedes from IP College side and took a U-turn at the traffic signal.

However, the left side of his car hit Kaim's motorcycle and Kaim fell off, while Jain simply sped away towards Under Hill Road.

Following the accident, the police procured CCTV footages and found that the car was a white Mercedes hatchback and police were preparing a list of owners of such cars in Delhi.

However, Jain himself surrendered when he grew fearful of the consequences.

"On Wednesday evening, Jain visited the police and confessed to being involved in the accident", Jatin Narwal DCP (North) said.

"His damaged car was thereafter seized. Since the police had already registered a case of rash and negligent driving and causing hurt, Jain was arrested late Wednesday night. He was later released on bail," Narwal added.
