Docs detained while marching towards Parliament against NMC bill's passage

New Delhi: Forty doctors were detained by the Delhi Police while they were marching towards Parliament on Thursday to protest the passage of the National

Medical Council Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

The police said the protesting doctors who arrived at the Central Secretariat metro station were detained and taken to Mandir Marg Police Station.

They were questioned and let off later, police added.

The area around Parliament saw heavy deployment of police and the roads around it were barricaded, slowing vehicular movement in the area.

Earlier, healthcare services at government hospitals, including AIIMS, were severely hit as resident doctors withdrew all services including emergency services in protest against a Bill which they say will encourage quacks.

Besides the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the strike also badly affected the neighbouring Safdarjung Hospital and the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in the heart of the city.
