Despite threat to her life, woman decided to elope

Gurugram: The case from Gurugram where a man shot his sister in the head from a close range can be described, at the very least as discord between blood relatives.
According to police sources, the accused Karan had deliberately shot his sister in the frontal part of the temple, so that the woman would die suffering with pain.
The macabre incident follows the horrific killing of Ankit Saxena in the national Capital earlier this week, for being in a relationship with a girl whose parents did not approve of their union.
Ironically, both these incident come at a time when Valentine's Day, a day observed by people to celebrate love, is around the corner.
While the woman in the Gurugarm case may not have cared much for the significance of Valentine's Day, she did understand the power of love.
Despite her family's protests, she took the risk of running away from her home and marrying her lover.
The woman was well aware of the consequences she would have dealt with and therefore decided to get married at a secret hideout, the location which was only known to her young brother-in-law.
"On November 4 last year, the complainant had told police that his brother was kidnapped and a case was filed in this regard," Gurugram police PRO Ravinder Kumar said.
Trying to get hold of his sister for more than six months, Karan finally succeeded after coming to know of her sister's location through her husband's young brother, who was kidnapped and tortured. He was eventually murdered in the foulest manner.
The incident has brought back haunting memories of couples being murdered in the state, for going against their family's wishes.
Khap panchayats, for long have had a dubious record, in such cases. However, the impact of khap panchayats in Gurugram – which is home to a diverse range of communities – is not as much as it is in other districts of Haryana.
Nevertheless, there is still a strong sense of preserving outdated customs and traditions among the village communities, which is also being followed by the younger generations.
