Delhi Police arrests JeM terrorist
NEW DELHI: A wanted Jaish-e-Mohammed alleged terrorist, Abdul Majeed Baba, has been arrested from Srinagar by a special team of Delhi police. He was brought to Delhi on Tuesday on remand for questioning.
The Jaish terrorist, carrying a reward of Rs. 2 lakh on his head, was arrested on Saturday from Soura in downtown Srinagar, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said.
Abdul Majeed Baba, a resident of Magrepora district of Sopore,was previously involved in a shootout in 2007 between the Delhi Police and terrorists.
Three terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Pakistan had escaped during the encounter. While he was acquitted in the case by a lower court, Delhi high court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him in 2014.
Ahmed Sajad Lone, one of the terrorists who escaped with Abdul Majeed Baba, was arrested in April.
For the last two months, Special Cell team had conducted several raids on accused's traced hideouts with the help of local police and Army, but each time he managed to escape the police dragnet. It was learnt that he was planning to escape to Pak-Occupied-Kashmir.
Finally, on May 11,a specific information/input was received that accused Majid will visit Shere-e-Kashmir Institute Medical Sciences Hospital in Shoura area in Srinagar.
Accordingly, the team of Special Cell already stationed at Srinagar rushed there and laid down a secret trapnear SKIMS Hospital where the accused's run was finally ended with his arrest
Police said that he was in a business of fruit selling since 1978 and runs Azad Fruit Agency at Mandi in Sopore. He owns apple orchards in the area. "During the year 2007, he got involved in terrorist activities through Yusuf, his close neighbor.He along with associates Fayyaz and Bashir came to Delhi to deliver a consignment of arms, ammunition & explosives to Pakistani terrorist Gafoor but all were arrested after shootout with team of Special Cell." Sanjeev Yadav, DCP Special Cell said.
