NEW DELHI: The Delhi government will open two bus depots at Rohini Sector-37 with a capacity of 150 buses each, to add to the existing 45-odd facilities in the city. The depots will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 43.76 crore by the Public Works Department, an official said.
The project has been approved by the government's Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) during a meeting, chaired by Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, which laid down a nine-month period for their construction.
The Delhi government had constructed eight depots in the city in the last three years, with an aim to strengthen the public transport system. During the budget, the government had said that due to unavailability of adequate space for bus depots the augmentation of the bus fleet was a challenge. Parking space was one of the major hurdles in the way of Delhi government acquiring new buses to strengthen the public transport buses fleet.
According to the plan, bus depots will be built on seven land parcels with a total area of over 50 acres by December 2018. These depots will come up at Rani Khera, Mundela Kalan, Dera Mandi, East Vinod Nagar, Narela, Bawana and Rewla Khanpur. These will accommodate over 1,200 new buses.
