DU sports quota now includes horse riding, golf; only seven apply

The University of Delhi sports quota has touched the elegance level while commencing two super sports categories- Golf and Horse Riding- for admission to the various courses in its colleges.

But apparently, the university has received only seven applications for the categories in after the registration process began on May 22.

Since the registration process has initiated, 12,914 aspirants have enrolled for 1,500 seats in undergraduate (UG) courses under the sports quota, while the number of applications received was just 6,000, the previous year.

As many as 900 students had got admission in DU colleges under 36 different categories in 2016-17, the DU officials informed.

Meanwhile, there is an acute shortage of coaches in Delhi University to conduct the trials.

Subsequently, varsity authorities are concerned as they don't have coaches for some sports to conduct the trials.

However, Delhi University has 150 physical education teachers.

"Any physical education teacher, who has an experience of 10 years or more, examine the capability of players in trials. Due to the paucity of sports teacher, we have to outsource experts from Sports Academy of India," said an official.

"Moreover, nearly 2,000 sports quota applicants have registered fake certificates and during the scanning, they were identified and finally, their applications were canceled," he added.

"Taking the lesson and to avoid such repetitive fraud, we have started online verification of certificates from this year.

"Even the certificate weightage has been decreased to 40 percent from last year's 50 per cent. Now, trials carry 60 per cent weightage," said Anil Kalkal, Director, Delhi University Sports Council.
