Differently abled, senior citizens score higher with NIOS

Understanding the challenges and difficulties faced by old aged and differently abled citizens, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) adopted innovative ways in imparting to their educational needs.

This resulted in the less privileged people scoring excellent marks in the senior secondary exams this year.

Senior citizens like Bijendra Narayan Singh (60), Javed Akhtar (63) and Ravish Chandra Katiyar (63) secured 62 percent, 74 percent, and 83 percent respectively with the help of NIOS.

The institution has also kept the aspiring dreams of young differently abled students like Anil (20) Nirmal, Arshad Ali (19) and Shailabh Singla (19) who scored over 65 percent. All of them have been suffering from locomotor disabilities.

The NIOS gives the choice of medium of instructions, the pace of learning, a combination of academic and vocational subjects and flexible scheme of examination.

The On-Demand Examination System (ODES) is in operation at Secondary and Senior Secondary stage, round the year. NIOS also offers 30 subjects in six mediums i.e. Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati and Odia mediums for Senior Secondary Examinations.

Besides these, NIOS has the provision of offering vocational subjects in combination with academic subjects.
