Delhi govt, Centre announce compensation to victim's kin

I: Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu on Monday gave away Rs 50,000 as financial aid to the family of the e-rickshaw driver who was beaten to death for stopping two men from urinating in the open outside the GTB Nagar Metro Station.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government also announced a compensation Rs 5 lakh compensation for the victim's family.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who announced the compensation for the kin of the deceased driver Ravinder, said the amount will be provided from the LG-CM's Relief Fund.

A senior government official said the Deputy Chief Minister spoke to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal before approving the compensation amount.

On Monday, Naidu – accompanied by Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari – met the family members of the victim.

The Minister also visited the spot outside GTB Nagar Metro station where the 32-year-old was beaten to death by around 20 men on Saturday evening.

"Naidu gave a cheque of Rs 50,000 from his own account to the wife of the deceased as interim relief. We have also talked to the Commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation for providing her with a job," Tiwari said.
The Minister also directed Delhi Police to arrest, as soon as possible, the men responsible for killing Ravinder, who was reportedly an advocate of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Tiwari further said, "The irony is that the spot where the e- rickshaw driver was beaten to death is hardly a few metres away from a Sulabh Shauchalaya complex.

"It is perhaps the first case where someone has given his life in the country for promoting cleanliness and sanitation and we are committed to support Ravinder's family."

Earlier in the day, Naidu also asked Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take stern action against those involved in the killing.

"Sad that an e rickshaw driver was beaten to death for stopping 2 people from urinating in public in Delhi. He was promoting #SwachhBharat," Naidu tweeted on Monday.

In another tweet, the Union Minister also wrote: "Asked Municipal Commissioner, North West Delhi to provide job to Ravindra's wife as per the rules. He promised to give a temporary job."
Ravinder, who lived in a slum near GTB Nagar Metro Station, had got married only last year. His bereaved wife is seven months pregnant.
