21-year-old woman jumps off DND flyway, dies

A 21-year-old woman committed suicide after she jumped into the Yamuna river from the DND flyway in south-east Delhi on Sunday.

The woman had reportedly asked a bus driver as to where his bus was headed and jumped off the flyway when he replied that the bus was under repair.

The police teams along with fire officials mounted a rescue operation and found her body after an hour.

She has been identified as Arti, a housemaid and has been shifted to AIIMS mortuary. She will be handed over to the relatives after post-mortem.
The police had received a call by the bus conductor Dheerender, who reportedly said that the woman had kept her purse and mobile phone at the footpath and jumped off.

"We sent a police team to the spot. The District Magistrate of the area had also reached there. A lot of people were gathered and the traffic was blocked," said a senior police official.

"We did manage to rescue her but unfortunately, she died. She is a resident of Ashok Nagar Colony, Farkabad, Uttar Pradesh. She has been working as a maid for the past three years," said DCP (South-East), Romil Baaniya.

So far, the police have not been able to ascertain the reason for the suicide. Her brother reached the spot soon after hearing about her death. He is being questioned along with the eyewitnesses.
