Inspired by movie, stalker made multiple attempts to bump off woman's husband

Many people do not believe in love at first sight. However, Vivek Kumar Aggarwal, a real estate agent, fell in love the minute he spotted a woman in Kirti Nagar in 2012.

Enamoured by her beauty, he stalked her for five years, reportedly after being inspired from Hindi movie Darr.

Aggarwal soon turned from a stalker into an obsessed lover, after the woman married another real estate agent Piyush.

He tried to eliminate his competition by orchestrating multiple attempts at her husband's life and came close to killing him after he shot at him in April this year.

Piyush luckily managed to survive the murder attempt, after which the local police managed to arrest Aggarwal from Budh Vihar in Rohini on Thursday.

Police said that during interrogation, Aggarwal disclosed all the details about how he had stalked the woman for five years, and had "grandiose visions of marrying her".

Five years ago, the woman – who too used to work in the real estate sector – was one day taking a stroll near Kirti Nagar, when Aggarwal first saw her. He later managed to get her cell phone number and tried to establish contact with her. The woman, however, spurned all his advances.

"He used to dream of marrying her but she got married to another man and this infuriated him," said a senior police official.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal, the incident came to light on April 20, when Aggarwal tried to kill Piyush. "Piyush used to pick his wife from Rohini West Metro station. When the couple reached their house around 8.10 pm, they were intercepted by a motorcyclist who fired at Piyush from a close range," Pal said.

After Piyush was discharged from Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, the couple reached home to find a letter, in which the accused had written that the attempt on Piyush's life was a result of the latter impregnating his sister.

"The accused had tried to divert our attention by falsely claiming that Piyush was involved with another woman," Pal said.

When the investigation began, it was found that several attempts have been made on Piyush. Two months after the couple's marriage, Aggarwal had opened fire at Piyush when he was taking a late night stroll with his cousin.

"He told the investigators that he was a fan of Shah Rukh Khan's character in Darr. He genuinely believed that he could get the woman by killing the husband," the official said.
