Costly power: Gurugram residents bear the brunt

The residents in Gurugram are paying a higher price for their power supply though they continue to reel under the power crisis this summer.

At Rs 8 per unit, the power supply does not come cheap in the Millennium city and with the longer duration of power cuts has resulted in citizens to pay an equally high amount of generator bills.

The charges for private generator services in the city is Rs 11 per unit.

The citizen bodies highlight that the issue of high electricity cost has been raised with the officials of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) yet the situation of power infrastructure continues to show no major improvements.

Citing line losses, various parts of the city are having daily power cuts as the power demand continues to peak.

The inadequate power infrastructure has resulted, especially in the posh areas, to take the connections of generators.

"There is a lack of regulation for power supply in the city. The residents are paying a higher sum for power in the city but the shortage of power during summer months has resulted in paying an equally higher amount to the generators. Even though we have asked the DHBVN officials to be more transparent towards higher electricity cost in the city, the officials have not heeded to our demand," said Dhruv Bansal of Gurugram Citizens Council.

"I have no qualms in saying that situation of power in Delhi is better managed than in Gurugram. When you have a situation when there is no power for the duration of 20 hours then you are forced to take generator connections even if it is costly, " said Amardeep Singh, a city resident.
