Stopping dog slaughter: Online petition gets 500 signatures

The online petition initiated by Anupama Srivastava over dogs being slaughtered and their meat being consumed has become popular online with 500 signatories and numbers are only expected to increase.

Anupama Srivastava, a resident of DLF Phase -2, was the owner of a deceased dog named Brownie.

Invoking incident of another missing dog named Motu, who too has been missing since April 11, Srivastava has stated that pet dogs from posh areas are being stolen, killed and their meat is being consumed by people.

"Brownie was a healthy friendly dog living peacefully with his pet parent Anupama till one day he fell victim to the taste buds of some people who ruthlessly slaughtered and ate him. Brownie is not alone. There are many dogs in Gurugram who are falling victim to this and even the more horrifying practice of being slaughtered for becoming food for us. Yes, most of the non-vegetarian delicacies we eat have got a large portion of dog meat in it. Be it Momos, Mutton Biryani Kababs.

This is not about any religion or race but about a law being broken by whosoever is doing it," are some excerpts of the post.

Srivastava, however, on the basis of video evidence alleges that her dog was kidnapped, killed and then consumed by a group of youngsters residing in Sikanderpur Village.

A FIR has been lodged under sections of 379 (theft), 429 ( an act of killing or maiming animal) under Indian Penal Code and Section 11 (1) (a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

"It is shocking to hear that a pet dog is abducted and then killed and consumed. The law should take its course in this case. There must also be a consideration on a lot of stray dogs who live in a pathetic state the city that continues to be exploited," said Saumya Bharadwaj, an animal right activist.
