BJP all set to seal Mayor, Dy Mayor posts for North MCD

Bharatiya Janata Party's Preeti Aggarwal and Vijay Kumar Bhagat are all set to be unanimously elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, after only one nomination each was filed for the two major corporation posts.

Aggarwal, the Delhi BJP secretary, won the Municipal election from Rohini F seat, while Bhagat was elected Councillor from Badli ward in North MCD.

On Thursday, the last day of filing nominations for functionaries of North MCD, candidates of all three political parties – BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party –filed their nominations for the upcoming mayoral polls, and six members of the Standing Committee. The elections for North MCD will be held on May 18.

The nominees of the Standing Committee include Seema Tahira (Congress), Tilak Raj Kataria (BJP), Jai Prakash (BJP), Jayendra Dabas (BJP), Ramesh Kumar (BJP), Aadesh Kumar Gupta (BJP), Vikas Goel (Aam Aadmi Party).
The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and office-bearers of the Standing Committees of the three Municipal Corporations will be elected in the first meeting of the newly-elected councillors.

The MCD Act stipulates the appointment of a woman councillor as the first Mayor during the five-year term of the civic bodies.

The elections in North MCD appear mere formalities due to the clear majority of BJP councillors.

The BJP, which fielded new faces in 267 of the 272 wards, won all three municipalities with a bigger margin than last time. In 2012, it had won a total of 138 wards. In 2017, it won 181.
