Man breaks open 'out of order' ATM, held

A man was arrested on Monday for breaking open a Union Bank of India's ATM of Najafgarh branch in outer Delhi as he became frustrated after the machine failed to dispense the money.

The incident occurred on Saturday after the accused, identified as Mukesh Kumar Singh, a photographer by profession, smashed the display screen of the ATM with his bare hands, only to realize that the money was in the cash dispenser located at the bottom of the machine.

After several failed attempts, Singh went back to his rented flat and returned with a screwdriver and a set of pliers. He then tried to pry open the cash dispenser but failed.

The accused was held after the police identified him on the basis of the CCTV footage.

He was arrested from a local tire puncture shop after his photographs from the footage were circulated among the locals.

Following his interrogation, the police told the Millennium Post that Singh has no previous criminal records and wanted to get hismoney from the ATM.

"When the machine did not dispense the notes, he thought of breaking open the machine. But when he returned with a set of screwdriver and pliers, he decided that not only will he take his own money but will also take all the money from the ATM," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), M N Tiwari.
