Deceased sisters were not registered with local police station as senior citizens
New Delhi: After the Delhi Police arrested four men for murdering two sisters, both above 70 years of age in Paschim Vihar, the need for preventive security for senior citizens has once again been into emphasis. The deceased Asha Pathak, 75 and Usha Pathak 78 were not registered with the local police station as senior citizens. However, that doesn't shrug off all responsibility from Delhi Police. The law enforcement agency should also search and reach out to senior citizens actively rather than waiting for them to turn up and register themselves.
In this case, it seems the over-trusting nature of the old women cost them their lives. The unsuspecting ladies simply called one of their acquaintances for a plumber and let the unverified man enter their apartment. "The senior citizens should register with us so that we can keep a check on them and know their well being time to time, there are some who skip the procedure but that is not advisable for their safety," said Seju Kuruvilla, DCP Outer. However, the double murder was partially a result of the lethargic attitude of the security guards at the Society gates who let the unverified men come inside and also the unawareness of Delhi Police that two septuagenarian women resided all alone in the Anandvan apartment.
In September, another 62-year-old senior citizen along with her 40-year-old daughter was murdered in Outer District's Miyawali. The case is still unsolved. Though Delhi Police time to time has tried to reach out to Senior citizens and has also launched a helpline number 1291 exclusively for them.
