Cyber crimes: Cops reach out to Delhi's elderly
New Delhi: Senior citizens in Delhi are easy targets for cyber criminals, who – using different modus operandi – make away with the hard earned money of the elderly.
In a bid to save the elderly from becoming easy victims of cyber frauds, Delhi Police organised programmes to spread aware about different types of cyber frauds.
Cyber awareness programmes were held in all four sub-divisions of Dwarka district, on the occasion of Senior Citizens Week.
The attending senior citizens were sensitised about the cyber crimes in the present times to which they easily fall prey as they are more vulnerable to the new technologies.
"A small power point presentation was also given for better understanding of the new technology, crime patterns and safe internet transaction practices.
"This would not only prevent them from falling prey to cyber fraud and cheating but would also make financial transactions via internet safe and easy," a police official said.
A total of 60 senior citizens attended the programme, which was organised at Dwarka South, Chawla, Dabri and Najafgarh sub-divisions.
The presentation included information on the various types of cyber crimes, such as ATM card fraud, fake bank calls, lottery, forged Facebook accounts, taking money in the name of the job or putting a tower in the house.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse stated that their emphasis is to make sure all-round security which includes protection from cybercrime.
They have taken different initiatives for the elderly people.
"Our beat officers keep visiting the places of senior citizens to check their safety and security," said the DCP.
The data accessed by Millennium Post stated that in 2016, around 123 persons were nabbed for their involvement in the different type of crimes against the senior citizen.
Thirty six persons were arrested for murder, while 87 were arrested for robbery.
Last year, 134 persons were arrested for their involvement in crime against senior citizens in the Capital.
Fifty two persons were arrested for murder whereas 80 persons were arrested for robbery.
Data till April 15 this year stated that Delhi Police has arrested 17 persons involved in different types of crime against the senior citizen.
According to Delhi Police data, in 2016 around 110 cases related to crime against senior citizens were reported in the city.
In 2017, around 91 cases were reported in which the Delhi Police claimed to solved 64 criminal cases.
