Criminal accused of 17 murders escapes from police custody

Gurugram: Haryana Police on Monday faced a major jolt after Vikas Dalal, a dreaded criminal escaped from its clutches. The major failure of the law enforcement officials can be gauged from the fact that Vikas was a history-sheeter and had 17 cases of murders registered against him. He was arrested by the special branch of Delhi police in 2016 and gradually handed over to Haryana police. He was lodged in the Faridabad jail.

In an escape that was no less than a Bollywood thriller, Dalal was accompanied by the police officials to the medical store in a hospital in Faridabad. In what can be termed as a planned move, Dala's henchmen were present at the spot and began to fire at the policemen. After firing of two rounds, the gangsters were successful in getting their leader released from the clutches of police.

The entire incident has again raised questions on the working of Haryana police. It's surprising how such a dreaded criminal was kept in such a minimal security. Investigations are also on to ascertain how the movement of the criminal was known by his men. This is the third such attempt in less than a month where criminals have been able to escape from the police custody. Earlier in Gurugram, two criminals who were accused of rape were able to flee from the custody of the police. One of the criminals was subsequently arrested.
