Cricket betting racket busted in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad police have arrested seven persons for allegedly accepting and placing betting on the ongoing ICC cricket World Cup matches from Sahibabad area on Sunday night.

Cops said that the accused were arrested while exchanging money as bets on the match between Pakistan and South Africa.

Cops said that they had received information that a few people were running the racket and were placing bets on the ongoing cricket World Cup matches in Sahibabad area.

The police then began gathering more information before raiding the flat from where the gang was operating.

"Acting on a tip-off, police on late Sunday night raided a flat in Tulsi Niketan area in Sahibabad and nabbed the accused red handed while they were jotting down bets on the ongoing match," said JK Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sahibabad police station.

Police officials said that the seven arrested accused- Vineet Kumar, Keshav Kumar, Chandrakant, Prakash, Vipin, Omprakash and Vikas, all natives of Ghaziabad and Delhi, have invited the punters to place bets on the match.

"Upon interrogating them, they told police that the gang used to get the rates online which they convey to punters through phone calls," added Singh.

Police have recovered Rs 41 thousand cash, a car, 15 mobile phones, a television with set top box and a few diaries in which they have maintained a record of betting.

Cops said that the gang procured SIM cards with fake document proofs and employed few persons to assist them in operating the racket.
