Court grants 1-day police remand to Asees
New Delhi: Asees Singh Chaddha, the 19-year-old accused was produced in Patiala House court on Tuesday amid security. The court granted the Delhi police one day police remand of the accused who rammed his SUV Bentley into an auto at posh Chanakyapuri killing a tourist from Turkmenistan and injuring two others from the same country. Police said that one day police remand of the accused has been taken to verify Asees Singh Chaddha's licence and verify other facts. The cops have booked him under IPC 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
"We have obtained remand to ascertain and verify the passport and other documents of the accused including the driving licence. Since the accused is a British citizen we are also verifying every document," said a senior police officer.
Sources said that the Police also took the accused Asees Singh Chaddha, a British citizen to the accident spot and reconstructed the sequence of events. Police wanted to cross check the accident occurred due to the high speed of the Bentley car Asees chaddha was driving. The CCTV around the area is also checked. Cops, however, denied that Asees was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The reason why cops went for IPC 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) instead of lighter section 304 A (death by negligence) was the gravity of the incident.
Witnesses said the Bentley Bentayga was speeding on Vinay Marg when it hit the autorickshaw, causing it to flip over and fling its occupants onto the road. The driver Asees Singh Chadha was caught and assaulted by some passersby before being handed over to police and placed under arrest.
Police said the passengers in the auto-rickshaw were three women from Turkmenistan — Alma Gul Atayeba (33), Gulshat Alijanova (51) and Gulia Yyam (55). The driver of the three-wheeler was identified as Raghubir Singh, a resident of Sangam Vihar in south Delhi. Alijanova succumbed to her injuries while the other three are in critical condition at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, police said.
