Cops seized over 1,000 'objectionable items' from Rohini, Tihar jails in 2017

New Delhi: Law enforcement agencies effectively deal with security concerns inside prisons in 2017, as vigilant policing by the Third Battalion of Delhi Armed Police (DAP) led to recovery of over 1,000 objectionable items during searching and frisking from the custody of under-trial prisoners (UTPs) from Tihar and Rohini jails.
Police data shows that in 2017, officials recovered as many as 1,472 tobacco products, cash worth over Rs 60,000, an iron strip, 104 bidis and cigarettes, and 97 miscellaneous items, which included mobiles and watches.
The Third Battalion performs duties of taking UTPs and/or convicts on custody parole to various destinations as per orders of courts.
In 2017, a total of 2.81 lakh UTPs of various categories were escorted to be produced before various courts in Delhi and outside the national Capital. Over the last year, a total of 578 UTPs were escorted for custody paroles.
Similarly, prisoners and UTPs facing health issues are escorted to various hospitals and guards are also provided for these persons at the hospital, in case they are admitted for treatment.
The DAP, led by Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Sanjay Singh, comprises seven armed battalions, with a posted strength of more than 7,000 police personnel.
The area of responsibilities of armed policemen range from guarding vital installations and treasuries, to the production of UTPs and organising major ceremonial functions and parade.
The First Battalion was deployed on 349 occasions for various law and order arrangements.
Static guards at 455 locations, including 52 vital installations, have been deployed to secure various government offices, banks.
The Second Battalion is entrusted with providing force for assistance of districts and units for law and order arrangement on demand.
The Fourth Battalion is responsible for providing manpower to various districts for all major law and order arrangements.
The Fifth and Sixth Battalions are entrusted with important tasks, such as the static guard in various important locations.
