CAB: TMC MPs slam Shah over Mamata's statement in 2005

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha witnessed uproar during the discussion on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on Wednesday.

TMC MPs Derek O'Brien and Sukhendu Shekhar Roy raised objections in the Upper House against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in which he referred to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's comment in 2005 objecting to infiltrators in Bengal.

Referring to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's quote on August 4, 2005, in Lok Sabha, the home minister said that "Even she (Banerjee) expressed concern over "infiltration into West Bengal" in 2005."

Reportedly, the TMC supremo and former Union Minister Mamata Banerjee said in the Lower House 14 years back that, "The infiltration in Bengal has become a disaster now... I have both the Bangladeshi and the Indian voters list. This is a very serious matter. I would like to know when would it be discussed in the House?"

Differing home minister's statement, TMC members rebuked and O'Brien said, "minister's statement is misleading the House."

Senior TMC RS MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy raised a Point of Order and referred to Rule 238(5), mentioning, "A member while speaking shall not reflect upon the conduct of persons in high authority unless the discussion is based on a substantive motion. Some remarks have been made on the conduct of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal and that cannot be allowed...We have the record with us to show, we shall table it. A misleading statement where he has named the Chief Minister."

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu also expressed disgrace over the uproar on the floor of the House.

Later, the 14 amendments to the CAB that were moved by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were rejected by the Rajya Sabha MPs.
