Bus hits 4 wedding attendees, 3 killed

Ghaziabad: An unidentified bus collided with four individuals returning from a wedding ceremony at National Highway-9 in Crossing Republic Police Station area of Ghaziabad killing three of them including a couple on late Tueaday night.

According to police, Pawan Kumar (42), a resident of Dadri in Gautam Budh Nagar district, was returning from a wedding ceremony in Moradabad on Tuesday evening with his 38-year-old wife Sunita. Accompanying them were Sunita’s relative Neelam (45), resident of Vijay Nagar, in Ghaziabad and Sunita’s sister Shweta, resident of Palam in Delhi. At around 9:30 pm, the four individuals have alighted a Moradabad-bound bus at the National Highway 9 in Crossing Republic police station area. They were standing alongside the highway.

Subsequently, a speeding bus approaching from Hapur side struck all four individuals. The collision resulted in severe injuries to all of them.

Nearby witnesses alerted the police. Police arrived at the scene and rushed the injured to District MMG Hospital and a private hospital in Noida, where doctors pronounced Pawan, his wife Sunita, and Neelam as dead.

Shweta was transferred to Delhi in critical condition. Her condition remains serious. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Wave City, Lipi Nagayach said that CCTV footage is under review to identify the vehicle and the accused driver shall be apprehended shortly. “The dead bodies were handed over to family after getting post-mortem done. A case will be registered and further investigation is underway” the ACP said.

On January 17, 2024, a tragic incident occurred on NH-9 in Ghaziabad, where a pedestrian was repeatedly run over by speeding vehicles after an initial accident. The victim’s body was severely damaged and unidentifiable, with only partial remains recovered.

The discovery was made by a highway maintenance crew. Police believe the fatality was caused by a speeding vehicle, with subsequent traffic failing to stop. Investigations are ongoing.
