Gurugram: In a dramatic incident, a car thief was shot dead in an encounter with police on late Thursday night.
Identified as Akash, the deceased man was reportedly travelling with his accomplices, when he was spotted by a police team.
While Akash was killed during the encounter, his two colleagues escaped, which was reported from Ravi Nagar in Old Gurugram area, police said.
The deceased belonged to Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh and had dozen of car theft registered against him in the city.
On Thursday night, he was travelling with his colleagues in a stolen Honda city.
Meanwhile, getting a cue about his presence in the nearby locations, the crime investigation team in collaboration with the Sector -9 police force began to track him through the GPS system.
After successfully locating him, the police officials asked the car to be stopped.
Understanding that they were in trouble, the people in the car began to fire gun shots at the police personnel which caused the police to fire in retaliation.
In the end, while the police were able to eliminate the main leader, his other two colleagues managed to escape.
"The main objective of our team was to arrest these people. However, as they began to fire the police personnel present did not have any choice but to return the fire which in turn resulted in the death of Akash," said Inspector Ravinder spokesperson of Gurugram police.
