Board exam: Girls consistently outperform boys in government schools, say officials

NEW DELHI: In an analysis after the results for the class X and class XII students of the Delhi government schools, the AAP led government found that performance of girl students in every subject has been increasingly better, including mathematics. Maths also. This fact challenges the gender-based myth that girls are not good in Maths," noted a statement by the government.

When CBSE declared the Class X result in early May this year, the pass percentage in Delhi Government schools was 71.6 per cent, an

improvement of about 2.7 per cent over the previous year. As against more than 96 per cent students passing in all other subjects, the pass percentage in Maths was 73.6 per cent and it was 86.9 per cent Science, it pointed out.

According to Delhi government data, students from co-ed schools performed better in the board examinations compared to those from an all-girls or boys school. The co-ed schools showed a pass percentage of 88.16 per cent for class X while those from an all girl's school had 82 per cent and all-boys schools had 74.8 per cent. For the class XII examinations, the pass percentage for co-ed schools stood at 98.03 per cent which was a marginal difference from an all girl's school with 97.42 per cent and 93.42 per cent from an all boys school.

The data also states that the girls have been performing better compared to the boys however the pass percentage of the boys was comparatively higher than girls in Mathematics. In the previous academic year, the pass percentage of boys was 77.27 per cent while that of girls was 73.78 per cent in mathematics for class 10 board examination. This year however the pass percentage of girls was 83.92 percentage while the pass percentage of boys was 78.78 percentage in Mathematics in the class X board examination. The government added that the facts and numbers presented challenges the gender-based myths that girls are poor in mathematics.

By conducting summer classes the government said that it saved a year of

16,395 students from Delhi government schools with a final result of 81.4 per cent. Close to 3,000 students cleared the compartment examination of class 12 which took the pass percentage from 94.24 to 96.53 per cent.
